The Enchanting Forests of Mauritius

We are thrilled to introduce Ebony Forest Reserve Chamarel, a hidden gem nestled in the heart of Mauritius. This secluded nature reserve is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, extraordinary biodiversity, and unwavering dedication to sustainable eco-tourism practices. It not only offers visitors an opportunity to experience natural beauty but actively contributes to the conservation and restoration of the island's flora and fauna.

The Ebony Forest Reserve is a non-profit organization dedicated to restoring the threatened flora and fauna of Mauritius. With less than 2% of the natural forest remaining, the founders Owen and Mary-Ann Griffiths purchased 50 hectares of invaded forest in 2005 to conserve and recreate an ebony forest, and began planting native and endemic tree species in 2006. Over the past 15 years, they have successfully planted 153,000 native trees, contributing to the conservation and restoration efforts.

In 2017, the reserve then opened a visitors and ecology center, which serves multiple purposes. Not only does it provide an opportunity for visitors to appreciate the beauty of the reserve, but it generates sustainable financing for conservation activities. It further plays a vital role in fostering a sense of interest, responsibility, and belonging in students. By integrating educational elements, the center aims to inspire the younger generation to appreciate and protect the natural environment. The center also features a site museum where visitors can explore the island's history, from the volcanic eruption that formed it to the diverse flora and fauna that call it home.

Mauritius was once the habitat of the now-extinct Dodo bird. Today, Ebony Forest stands as an immaculately wild forest, where rare birds flit among the precious tall standing trees. Notably, the reserve is home to seven of the nine endemic bird species of Mauritius, namely the Mauritius bulbul, Mauritius paradise flycatcher, Mauritius kestrel, Pink pigeon, Olive white-eye, Mauritius grey white-eye and Echo parakeet.

Visitors have the privilege of seeing and even hugging an ebony tree that has stood for more than 350 years. The reserve further offers open-air safari jeep rides, breathtaking views from a sublime point, guided tours, and birdwatching opportunities for enthusiasts. For a truly unforgettable experience, the reserve offers a remarkable mid-canopy walk.

As a PLCnetwork member, Ebony Forest is distinguished by its steadfast commitment to sustainable eco-tourism. This ethos permeates every aspect of its operations, as the reserve endeavors to safeguard the natural environment and promote conservation efforts while offering visitors an authentic and immersive experience. Among its many initiatives, the reserve harnesses renewable energy sources, minimizes waste generation, and champions low-impact activities.

Another important aspect of the Ebony Forest is its commitment to community development. The reserve employs local staff and supports a number of community development projects. This not only benefits the local community but also helps to promote a sustainable future for the reserve.

In conclusion, Ebony Forest Reserve Chamarel is definitely worth a visit. The unique tree-mid-canopy walk and the commitment to sustainable eco-tourism and community development make it a one of a kind experience.
