Brackenburn Private Nature Reserve is situated in The Crags which is in the plateau leading to the Tsitsikamma mountains along the South Coast of South Africa. Brackenburn is a Wildlife Release Facility and also hosts guests for nature experiences.

It comprises 90% Afro montane forest. There is a healthy diversity of indigenous trees as well as ferns, orchids, aquatic life in the Buffels River which flows through the reserve, as well as indigenous animals, bird life, reptiles, insects, bugs and spiders. The fallow fields allow for a range of activities to experience the landscape and the mission of Brackenburn. For example, there are forest trails which are utilised by birders, hikers and other visitor groups.

 

Conservation Highlights:

  1. Possible nesting spot of Crowned Eagle. Monitoring of Buff Spotted Fluff-tails and Crowned Hornbills
  2. Dark Sky Night Star-Gazing.. This is an expanding project.
  3. Monitoring of Velvet worms; various Fungi are found in the forest alongside Harvestman spiders, Red-fin Minnow in the river; and Miniature orchid species occurr in the forest
  4. Guided group hikes by exceptional field guides
  5. No impact Camping
  6. Making Bio-char to help regenerate forest where invasive trees have been harvested.
