Creating a home away from home is never easy – just ask the team at Sumberkima Hill Private Villa Retreat in Bali which had its humble beginnings in 2014 when founder, Bernard Hudepohl from the Netherlands, sought to develop a destination in a sustainable way that is successful on all aspects. Sumberkima Hill recognizes an important aspect of eco-tourism is creating infrastructure that integrates in the landscape. The team prioritizes conservation evidenced through its efforts to preserve abundant natural beauty of North West Bali.
Sumberkima Hill is a 10 ha serene getaway located in the mountains of North West Bali. It is ideal for exploring the Bali Sea, the volcanoes of Java, and Barat National Park. Even more, Sumberkima Hill has a restaurant in a remote location that offers healthy food prepared with locally sourced produce.
Through partnerships with communities, Sumberkima Hill encapsulates one of PLCnetwork’s tenets of collaboration. The team believes in active engagement with its communities through various initiatives such as setting up English classes in the village and participation in local projects to foster conservation activities. Sumberkima Hill is therefore designed around the principles of community involvement, development, job creation, poverty alleviation and training. Its villas are individually owned and owners participate in such projects. The team further fosters close collaboration with the local communities for long-term social and economic investment opportunities, including accommodation, services, and organic farming.
Furthermore, Sumberkima Hill is conducting a Reef Restoration project with the aim of planting corals, improving water quality, introducing marine life, to name a few. ‘Old school ways’ might be their secret ingredient as they invite guests to disconnect from the stresses of modern life and join such activities.
As a result, Sumberkima Hill is initiating a lifestyle that nourishes individual growth be it in economic, mental, and intellectual wellbeing.
Evidently, Sumberkima Hill has a broad spectrum of community involvement and activities. This is a great example of how establishing a travel destination can also be used to pilot positive, long lasting social change in a region. For the future, Sumberkima Hill aims to expand its villas as well as grow its operations to further increase the health and life of coral reefs and surrounding marine life.
